((This is an RP journal created to...Well, it was for Cleft of Dimensions, but the idea kind of died. So now it's up for Sages of Chaos and other related communities! Anyway, all questions are best presented to
dreamercassee. You know, for the whole staying IC thing.))
The following is considered OOC knowledge, and cannot be used IC unless the character(s) in question have discovered said information.
Basic Info: Variance is the fifth and last endeavor of the team behind the 'Force Manipulation Stratagem' system, originally destined to become a Maverick Hunter and simply keep his place. Of course, Fate had something else in mind for him, and sent him off on his true path on the night he was supposed to be revealed to the inquiring public.
And so began his life in the 'Cleft of Dimensions'; a place of magic and mystique, of legends and heroes, and where the gods just can't seem to play nicely with each other. He took his first steps warily but openly into this odd new frontier, and was surprised to find that he could use the FMS system much more easily among the flourishing fields and life in general than in the humming training rooms of his old life.
Variance did become a Hunter eventually, having been accepted after his run-in with a rather unsavory reploid by the name of Vice. But it was still a quiet life for a decent stretch of time, when Vice wasn't running into him screaming bloody murder.
Things picked up around the time another reploid named Seikou dropped into the Cleft, bringing with him his own troubles and ambitions. Naturally, one of those ambitions was to become a Hunter, though for a different reason than Variance. The two of them became colleagues and good friends(and eventually HELO LUVARRS), and things were relatively sound once more(except for Vice, of course).
[insert all that jazz about Jango being evil muahaha and Vari going into seclusion]
Personality: Variance is relatively quiet, adopting the philosophy of 'don't speak if you have nothing to say'. When he does speak, however, he's very knowledgeable and with a veritable amount of advice to dispense. He takes interest in the more abstract ideas of Life, the Universe, and Everything, looking out to the farthest horizons and generally trying to make sense of the world. As such, he tends to have an adventurous streak, travelling to the very edges of the world in the pursuit of The Question(we all know the answer is Forty-Two). Also, Variance tends to be overly optimistic, especially when everything else is stacked against him. Despite this, he knows when it's time to face the facts; he just recognizes it a little later than most.
Other Details: Variance is the only functioning reploid to bear and subsequently use the FMS system, which allows him to use the environment itself as a weapon. From diversionary yet harmful blasts of air to concentrating the reflected light of the moon, everything around him can be used to his advantage, even if it's not visibly present(such as using Lucent Beam in broad daylight). The only disadvantage to having this extremely versatile system is the resulting strangeness of his construction. He looks like every other reploid(perhaps a little thinner with the armor; think X8 style here), but his internal systems are completely different from that of standard-model reploids. As such, he can't use any equipment that requires a physical, hardwired connection, such as a Buster(there was a very gruesome incident involving a Buster... let's just say he screamed and bled a lot and leave it at that).
Furthermore, the FMS draws on Variance's own internal energy stores, and can easily put him into emergency shutdown if used strongly in a short period of time or constantly without rest. The only exception or alternate energy source is that commonly known as 'mana', and only if Variance has been around it enough to know how to manipulate it sufficiently.
